How the government's new Everton stadium decision will give Blues accounts advantage

Everton know that when planning permission for their new stadium is officially granted, the money spent on the project will no longer count against them in football's financial rules.

By the end of June last year, the Blues had spent a total of £39.3m on their stadium dream, but until they are given the go-ahead by Liverpool City Council to start work, then that money will remain on the club's balance sheet.

But on Friday the government, who had been reviewing Everton's planning application for a 52,888 stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, decided they were not going to intervene and had passed the plans back to the local authority.

The city's planning committee had unanimously voted in favour of the Blues' plans in February and will now, in writing, give the club planning permission to start construction at the waterfront site.

And when that happens, Everton can capitalise all money spent on the project so far because investment in infrastructure is permitted under both Financial Fair Play and Premier League Profit and Sustainability rules - and does not go against the club when their accounts are being scrutinised.

The Blues have not issued an up-to-date figure on the amount of money they have spent on the new stadium but the club are now due to hand over £22.5m to Peel in order to officially take over the Bramley-Moore Dock site.

But that expenditure will be allowed to be capitalised.

Everton are expected to offer a more precise overall cost for their new stadium once a final build schedule has been agreed with Laing O'Rourke.
