The biggest news in the world of TV blogs this week was surely the Emmys (remarked upon in this very stable yesterday), which was liveblogged far and wide - on high profile print/web publications like Entertainment Weekly, on collaborative TV blogs like South Dakota Dark and somewhat randomly, by Joan Rivers.
Much of the attention after the fact, of course, was about the rather heavy-fingered attitude of Fox's censors on the issue of swearing. And sexual references. And mentions of the war. And, for all we know, many other things. The camera swept off Sally Field as she mentioned the unmentionable (conflict, and it being a bad thing) and focused on the ceiling, in what Defamer mockingly describes as another Great Moment In Censorship. So who knows what else the camera was pointedly NOT pointing at? There could have been someone dressed in an enormous penis outift in the balcony, for all we know. In fact, knowing the extreme lengths of bizarre ballgown design that some attention-hungry celebrities will go to to get pap-snapped on the red carpet, there probably was.
Anyway, now the TV Oscars are all over for another year, US TV blogs can get back to the proper, dedicated business of things. Things like talking about how great Doctor Who is, which makes us feel all British and Union Flagish and terribly proud, even though, to be fair, we had nothing to do with producing the episode, we just happened to live in the same country in which it was being made.
It does bring back that age old question of when British TV might start producing more fabulous TV drama series Of Length for us to be fond/proud of. Well, Five are talking about throwing themselves into the proper drama series ring, as reported by The Stage's TV Today, so that may, perhaps, help? Then again, TV Today ask "What's the Right Length For a Five Drama?" and then go on to mention Family Affairs; the right length for which was really "Around 27 seconds or as long as it takes you to work out that you're sitting on the remote", and the only people who never got that - for several years, in fact - were Five themselves. We shall see.
There's always the new US TV series to look forward to, which, who knows, may well be picked up by Five once they've packed in the much more difficult-sounding "making their own drama" plan. There are, of course, reviews of the season promos, openers and concepts all out there, but I'm a geek and this is my round-up, so here's a review of some of the new season's big shows websites.
Meanwhile, back over at TV Today, they're all getting quite weirdly excited about the premiere of High School Musical 2 on UK television this Friday. I did try and find some reasonable blogs expressing a similar kind of excitement about the event but, frankly, the ones I found didn't seem to have mastered the proper use of vowels in the English language, and so I'm refusing to link to any of them. If you know of anyone getting excited about this on a British blog that CAN spell, please do let me know by email, or in the comments below. Meanwhile, here are a couple of blogs that I did find, which I'm happy to link to only because I don't know enough Spanish or Japanese to know if they're using 'txtspk'/complete sentences or not.
· Later in the week - Reality TV Blogs Round Up. In the meantime, if you know of any great blogs that often talk about TV - particularly British ones - do let me know, either by email, or in the comments below.
