American women face uphill battle to rejoin workforce during Covid-19 pandemic

PEOPLE & PROFIT © FRANCE 24

The Covid-19 pandemic has wiped out three decades of gains for women in the American workforce, with their participation hitting its lowest level since 1988. As International Women's Day approaches, Elise Gould of the Economic Policy Institute says the pandemic has "magnified the cracks" already present in the US labour force. She tells FRANCE 24 the US government stimulus plan will help in the short term – but that more needs to be done to address the gender pay gap and occupational segregation.

Also in the programme:

  • Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has shattered the glass ceiling at the World Trade Organization – now, she has to bring the trade body into the 21st century.
  • Entrepreneur Soraya Dankoro, CEO of CorpFocus, tells FRANCE 24 why she's encouraging young women to "dream bigger" as they chart their futures.
