How the coronavirus R rate in Wales compares with England, Scotland and Northern Ireland

Wales may have a slightly higher R number than other parts of the UK according to the latest data.

The R number is the number of people that one infected person will on average pass the virus on to. When the figure is above one, an outbreak can grow exponentially, but as long as it remains below one the number of people infected with the virus will fall.

In the last coronavirus daily briefing on Friday, November 20, Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford said the latest estimate for the R rate was between 0.9 and 1.2.

This figure is down from being between one and 1.3 last week, and one to 1.4 the week before.

It is important to bear in mind that there is quite a delay in when the Welsh Government publishes the data and the Welsh rate is likely to be lower now because of the fire-break lockdown.

  • East of England - 1 to 1.3 (fall)
  • London - 1 to 1.2 (same)
  • Midlands - 1 to 1.2 (fall)

In Scotland the R rate is currently estimated as being between 0.8 and one, very slightly down from being between 0.8 and 1.1 last week.

In Northern Ireland the R number has also stayed around one this week. The region is set to face a two-week period of tougher lockdown measures from Friday, November 27.
