How the city looked on the last weekend before pubs, shops and restaurants reopen

This is what the city centre looked like on the last weekend before pubs, shops and restaurants reopen in the next stage of the government's roadmap.

People across the region have been eagerly awaiting the day when some of their favourite venues in Liverpool can reopen and that day has finally arrived.

From tomorrow, April 12, pubs, bars and restaurants can open for outdoor drinking and dining and non-essential retail will return.

Hairdressers, barbers and nail salons will welcome back customers and indoor leisure facilities like gyms will also reopen.

Preparations were underway in the city today in anticipation of the changes, as staff laid out tables and chairs to create outdoor spaces.

Boujee Restaurant and Bar was among the businesses to have transformed their outdoor area in Chevasse Park, with a fluorescent pink and flamingos theme.

Messages of hope were written on billboards around the city including one on Church Street that read "All Together Now."

Another sign outside M&S said "bring on brighter days" while others said "Liverpool, great to see you" and "welcome back."

The area around Liverpool ONE was eerily empty this evening with only a handful of people in sight.

Monday marks the start of stage two of the government's roapmap for lifting the national lockdown in England.

Under the new rules, up to six people, or two households, can meet outdoors, including at beer gardens, cafes or restaurants with outdoor seating spaces.

Step 2 of lockdown easing means that, as of April 12, these changes will come into force:

  • Pubs and restaurants can open and serve customers outside again
  • Hairdressers and nail salons can open
  • Gyms can open
  • Non-essential shops will be allowed to open, in some cases until 10pm
  • Zoos and theme parks can open
  • One household will be allowed to stay overnight somewhere in the UK - but not with another household
  • Accommodation will be available to rent such as short term holiday lets or campsites - but not hotels
  • 15 people can attend a wedding

May 17 is the earliest date for Step 3 of the roadmap, when most outdoor social contact restrictions will be lifted, and indoor mixing will be allowed between two households.

After this, June 21 is the earliest date for Step 4 when the government hopes to be able to lift all legal limits on social contact and to reopen all remaining parts of the economy, including nightclubs.
