How the Championship is predicted to finish after Bristol City win and Leeds United and West Brom slip up

It doesn't need reinforcing, given how set in stone the reputation of the Championship is, but each weekend in the division is littered with crazy matches and almost impossible-to-predict outcomes.

Having not won for three matches and with top scorer Steven Fletcher suffering a serious injury, Sheffield Wednesday go to Elland Road to take on leaders Leeds United and win 2-0.

West Brom's slightly alarming downturn continued as they drew 2-2 to struggling Charlton while there were bonkers games at the Riverside and the Madejski Stadium where Derby and then Reading claimed injury time equalisers against Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest.

From Bristol City's perspective, the Robins claimed a much-needed 2-0 win at Wigan Athletic to restore both confidence and belief in their promotion push as the January transfer window kicks into gear.

With just six points separating Brentford in third and Preston North End in 10th, there is a clear grouping of clubs of will jostle and likely swap places in the play-off positions between now and the end of the season.

Forecasting exactly how the Championship is going to pan out is notoriously difficult but renowned American statistician Nate Silver, via his FiveThirtyEight website, is widely considered to have devised the most accurate and comprehensive model for predicting how the current standings will bear out over the remaining 19 games of the season.

Using a number of metrics including current form, strength of future opponents, expected goals for and against and the market value of each respective squad, here is how FiveThirtyEight project the second tier to look on May 2.
