The Arizona Cardinals traded up in front of the Miami Dolphins last April to snatch up quarterback Josh Rosen. And now, one year later, it sounds increasingly like the Cardinals are going to be taking another first-round quarterback, Kyler Murray, and sending Rosen packing along the way.
Never mind whether the Dolphins should be the one to offer up a pick for Rosen, as it doesn’t sound like this front office is in the running (even though they should be). The latest rumors have connected three teams to offers for Rosen: the Giants, the Patriots and the Chargers.
The common theme with each of these teams? They pick behind Miami in the Draft order. (Well, the Giants have 6 but reports are that the team is eyeing a pass rusher in that spot). How would the Cardinals trade of Rosen to one of those teams help Miami?
Because it keeps all the quarterback hungry teams in front of the Dolphins in play, which will allow a better overall prospect to fall into Miami’s lap. It’s becoming increasingly clear that Kyler Murray won’t make it to the Dolphins’ pick. The Dolphins still have teams picking ahead of them in New York, Denver and Cincinnati who have some level of need at quarterback, which could pull both Dwayne Haskins and Drew Lock off before Miami picks.
Here’s a little secret: Haskins and Lock? They’re not among the 12 best football players in this class. There are some defensive stars in the making and some gifted offensive tackles.
Keeping the quarterback market ahead of Miami volatile keeps pushing better players at other positions further down the board, and right into Miami’s lap. The Dolphins need a quarterback of the future, but odds are he’s not in this year’s class anyway. Might as well get the best available talent.
