That result over their close rivals was further enhanced by dropped points for West Brom and Leeds United.
The Baggies drew 0-0 with Birmingham City but still moved to the top of the table on goal difference as Leeds United were beaten 2-0 on Sunday by Cardiff City.

At the bottom of the table, Charlton Athletic were the biggest winners after they beat Hull City to leapfrog them in the table and plunge Grant McCann's side into further danger.
Barnsley pulled out a shock win away at Queens Park Rangers whilst Wigan Athletic beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 in another crucial relegation six-pointer.
With only three points separating sixth and 12th in the race for the play-offs the same margin between 17th and 22nd, it's all to play for with eight matchdays remaining.
