You just have to see this Daily Mirror advert from, I think, 1960. It has been pointed out - for example, by Matthew Engel in his excellent book, Tickle the Public - that the Mirror under Hugh Cudlipp, while striving to attract young readers, was often clumsy, cloying and downright embarrassing. Here is proof.
