How Tammy Abraham could be affected by Chelsea's £53m Timo Werner transfer breakthrough

The big Chelsea transfer news at the moment revolves around RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

After missing out on a forward in the January transfer window, the Blues are wasting no time in making moves to bolster their attacking options before the summer window opens.

Werner had been heavily linked with a move to Premier League rivals Liverpool this summer, but football.london understands Frank Lampard's side are in pole position to close a deal.

The Blues are ready to activate the Germany striker's £53million release clause before it expires on June 15, and are in negotiations over personal terms, with a five-year deal expected to be offered.

Werner's potential arrival at Stamford Bridge should help Lampard's side overcome one major problem and that's scoring goals.

On numerous occasions this season - in particular, home games against the likes of West Ham United, Bournemouth and Southampton - the Blues have dropped points due to wastefulness in front of goal.

Werner has netted 31 times across all competitions this term, including the winner against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League, so his signing could take Chelsea to the next level.

But How could Tammy Abraham be affected by the arrival of Werner?

The 22-year-old has done a fine job at leading the line since returning from a successful loan spell at Aston Villa, netting 13 Premier League goals in 25 appearances, but his place in the team will be under threat if Werner signs.

Or is it?

Whilst Werner does operate down the middle, he has also been used on the flanks by Leipzig as well as the German national team as his pace and movement provides a problem for the opposing full-back.

If the Blues aren't successful in their attempts to land Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Jadon Sancho, then Werner is a realistic option for the left-wing and Abraham continues to lead the line.

With Hakim Ziyech already signed sealed and delivered, Lampard could even alter his formation to have the Morocco international playing behind a strike pairing of Abraham and Werner.

Whatever the case is, Chelsea's move for Werner simply increases the competition for places in attack and Abraham should still have a key role to play next season.
