How Sunderland flop earns more money than the likes of Wayne Rooney and Bastian Schweinsteigher in MLS

He may have flopped at Sunderland but Toronto FC forward Jozy Altidore is now earning major money in MLS.

In fact Altidore is the fourth highest paid soccer player in the United States and Canada, earning more money than the likes of Wayne Rooney, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Carlos Vela and Nani.

The 29-year-old is earning a $4,891,250 base salary while earning $6,332,250 a year in total.

His wage packet is only bettered by his Toronto and USA international team-mate Michael Bradley, former Barcelona and Tottenham midfielder Giovani Dos Santos and Los Angeles Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic in MLS.

The figures may come as a surprise to Sunderland fans given Altidore's ill-fated stay at the Stadium of Light.

After a prolific spell with AZ Alkmaar in Holland, much was expected of Altidore when he made the move to Sunderland in 2013.

However, he mustered just three goals in 18 months and he was used as part of a deal to bring Jermain Defoe to Wearside from Toronto FC in January 2015.

Altidore has scored 65 goals in 123 appearances for Toronto FC since and he is widely considered as one of the best players in division.

As a result, his salary reflects that - as much as it may surprise Black Cats fans.
