How Sunderland could complete their season at regional hubs, under a new proposal

Sunderland could complete their season by playing their remaining games at a series of 'regional hubs' under a plan being considered by the EFL, according to a report.

Sunderland's eight fixtures are among 341 matches still outstanding across Leagues One, Two, and the Championship, and the EFL is still hopeful that it will be possible to play those games at the original venues as planned.

But if the Covid-19 restrictions are eased sufficiently to allow football to continue behind closed doors, it may still be impractical to use all 70 EFL grounds to complete the programme.

And the London Evening Standard says that one idea under consideration is to play out the remaining games at regional hubs, most likely at a number of stadiums in London, the South West, the Midlands, the North East, and the North West.

The report claimed that the EFL had written to all member clubs on Tuesday to put forward the proposal, and ask them to put forward an 'operational plan' considering how games could be staged without fans.

If the 'regional hub' idea does go ahead, it is not clear whether different venues would be chosen to play out the games for each division, or if individual hubs would stage games from Leagues One, Two, and the Championship.
