Missouri Senator Josh Hawley has introduced the American Worker Rebate Act to send at least $600 to American families to offset higher prices caused by Donald Trump‘s tariffs and share federal revenue generated by Trump’s tariff policies.
Responding to Hawley’s proposal, however, some online urged Hawley not to “change the subject,” referring to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal that has divided Trump’s base. Moreover, many noted the contradiction in Hawley’s plan. One post said in part, “How stupid is this? Charging Americans a tariff tax on foreign goods then offering a rebate of your taxes. Makes no sense. Maybe dropping the tariff scam would be a better idea.”

Hawley announced his proposed legislation in a statement, which said that federal revenue from Trump’s tariffs was nearly $30 billion in June, and was projected to reach $150 billion in 2025 alone. But at what cost? Among other effects, Trump’s tariffs are estimated to cost the American household $2,700 in lost income in 2025, or around $22,000 over their lifetime.
Generally speaking, the jury is still very much out on whether Trump’s tariff plan is a success or a failure. It’s simply too early to tell. Hawley seems to admit that Trump’s tariffs put an undue burden on the American consumer, and Hawley’s proposal could be seen as a move to divert attention away from Epstein.
One social media comment pointed out, “Now they are trying to buy America’s silence? I’m sorry I can’t be bought for 600 dollars.” Another added, “Trump thinks since it worked during Covid, just literally sending checks to the ‘Poors’ will make him popular. Like a king throwing bread and coins to the crowd! ‘They love me!’ And finally, “Im still waiting on that 5,000 check they promised during the campaign,” one commenter said.

After Hawley’s act was announced, he clarified to Real America’s Voice when he said “Americans deserve a tax rebate,” as he stated in the press release announcing the proposal, he didn’t mean all Americans, strangely suggesting the rebate would only go out to “Trump blue collar voters,” not Biden’s voters without clarifying how they would know.
Again, a comment noted, “Anything to distract from the Epstein evidence.” Another added, “Why a rebate when Americans will be paying more and getting less? Why not pay down the new debt of 2.8 TRILLION that the BBB (which Hawley voted for) added to our deficit? All Politics.”
