How students can make sure they can vote in December General Election

With the Labour Party confirming they will back a General Election - the country is set to go to the polls in December.

It is highly , and students have raised concerns about what it could mean for their ability to cast a vote.

One of the likely dates for the election is December 12, 2019 - when many students may have finished their term and headed home for the Christmas break.

This could have a serious impact on the vote.

Students are due to break up for the Christmas holidays on December 9 and will only return to university around January 3 2020.

One student, Peter tweeted: "He wants to hold an election the week the University’s break for Christmas when all the students will be travelling home and may not be registered to vote at their home address. Don’t let him."

And Emilia wrote: "I don't think a Christmas general election is a good idea, it's designed to get rid of the majority of the student vote and force in a BXP/Tory coalition".

It's feared that some students will not be registered to vote at their home address.

Similarly, if they are travelling home, they may miss the vote entirely.

But it's worth noting that you can register to vote at two addresses if you're student.

If you split your time between two addresses, you can register to vote at both addresses as long as they’re not both in the same election area.

You must be a citizen of Britain, the Commonwealth, Irish Republic or a European Union member state.

At local elections, you can vote in both places.

At national elections, like a Parliamentary election or European election, you can only vote in one place but you can choose which place you vote in.

But be warned, voting in more than one place at national elections is a criminal offence.

You can find all the information on how to make sure you are registered to vote in this crucial election here.
