How Steven Davis can kick-start Rangers loan spell with Northern Ireland Euro 2020 qualifiers

Steven Davis has endured a difficult return to Rangers since joining on a six-month loan from Southampton.

He's found himself down the pecking order with the likes of Glen Kamara, Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack preferred to him in the middle of the park.

He was never going to replicate the success he achieved with the club during his first spell, but there's no doubt supporters expected slightly more from the Northern Ireland captain.

The acquisition of Davis was widely called the best bit of business in the January transfer window and was meant to help the Light Blues put up a title challenge against rivals Celtic .

That hasn't quite materialised, but Davis has bide his time on the sidelines and played the full 90 minutes in the draw against Kilmarnock last weekend. Despite the disappointing result, the 34-year-old was one of the better performers on the day for the Gers.

It will definitely give Steven Gerrard food for thought over the international break, especially off the back of such a disappointing month for his side.

And Davis will have surely enhanced his chances by putting in an impressive display last night against Estonia as Northern Ireland got their Euro 2020 qualification underway.

He doubled his side's lead from the penalty spot after Aberdeen's Niall McGinn opened the scoring as Michael O'Neill's side ran out 2-0 winners.

With the midfielder yet to be offered a contract from Rangers, as his deal at St. Mary's runs out in the summer, it seems he is taking the opportunity to show Gerrard he should be in his plan's for the remainder of the season and going forward into next year.

Another good performance in green against Belarus is not only an opportunity to bring success to his country, but it could have a positive knock-on effect for his club too.
