How Steve Bruce reacted to the midweek setback against Crystal Palace

Allan Saint-Maximin has been handed his first start since November as Newcastle United look for a home win against Southampton.

The French winger is on the team sheet along with incoming loan signing Joe Willock who goes straight into midfield.

The Magpies had to drop Isaac Hayden to defence with Ciaran Clark's partner expecting and the centre-back unavailable due to family reasons.

Hayden slotted alongside Fabian Schar in defence while Jamal Lewis started despite Steve Bruce saying he would miss the game yesterday.

Speaking about Willock's arrival Bruce said: "He’s fine and available.

"He’s trained two sessions with us and is getting used to the new environment. Of course, it’ll take a little bit of time to settle but we’re very pleased with that we’ve seen."

UNITED : Darlow; Manquillo, Schar, Hayden, Lewis; Hendrick, Shelvey, Willock; Almiron, Saint-Maximin; Wilson.

Subs : Dubravka, Dummett, Carroll, Joelinton, Ritchie, Gayle, Krafth, Fraser, Anderson
