How St Etienne's impressive season banked Sunderland an extra £1million

Sunderland will bank an extra £1million this summer from last summer's sale of Wahbi Khazri.

That is because the French top tier side exceeded expectations this season to finish fourth in the Ligue 1 table and qualify for next season's Europa League group stages.

And a clause in the transfer taking Tunisian international Khazri from the Stadium of Light to St Etienne means that Sunderland will receive the bonus of an extra £1m in the bank this summer.

Owner Stewart Donald made the revelation during his appearance on the Roker Rapport podcast on Tuesday, where he dissected the club's disappointing end to the season, as they missed out on promotion.

But he was also keen to settle one or two falsities about the club's finances and his acquisition of the Black Cats.

And it was while describing the healthy state that the club is now in financially that he revealed the bonus income.

Khazri played a key role in St Etienne's surprise campaign - netting 13 and assisting six more during a lucrative season back in France after his Sunderland disappointment.

Sunderland fans react as another League One season looms

He wasn't the only ex-Black Cat to help St Etienne and thus also help Sunderland though. Khazri is team-mates with former Sunderland loannee Yann M'Vila who has also been in fine form for them this term. His performances have even attracted the interest of West Ham this summer.

Either way, Sunderland should be grateful for the extra £1m in the bank this summer.
