If you’ve got an older smartphone you’ve probably run out of space for apps.

Except for this one: BootChess is a fully working chess game coded in just 487 bytes. That’s an entire game in the same number of characters as this article.

There are flaws. The game doesn’t implement rules such as castling or en passant capture, and the AI is… not great. But as the coder Baudsurfer points out, the smallest fully legal game would just resign as its first move. And where is the fun in that?
