How sharing your dreams can help you survive the Covid lockdown

Getting 40 winks after another day of disruption caused by the coronavirus restrictions can be a welcome rest.

For some, however, even their sleep cannot escape the lockdown.

Many have seen their sleeping patterns changed during the pandemic, whether that’s struggling to doze off at night or experiencing vivid dreams.

The latest episode of Alone Together - A Coronavirus Podcast looks at the phenomenon of sleep, and how we can get a better night’s rest amid the disruption.

Professor Mark Blagrove from Swansea University’s Sleep Lab discusses why we may be experiencing more lucid dreams during the lockdown, and what they reveal about our lives.

He also tells Dan McLaughlin, podcast producer at the Manchester Evening News, that sharing and listening to other’s dreams can help us “start to gain empathy” and learn more about different people.

Alone Together’s Morven McIntyre speaks to Dr Megan Crawford from the Sleep Research Unit at the University of Strathclyde about her research into insomnia – and offers tips on how to combat it.

She stresses the importance of having wider discussions on sleep, and the “debilitating” impact of insomnia on our ability to function during the day.
