How Sean Longstaff's remarkable progress for Newcastle didn't go unnoticed but midfielder focused on nothing but getting back to full fitness

Sean Longstaff is focused on nothing but returning to full fitness at Newcastle United - despite his impressive form attracting some of the Premier League's big guns.

Longstaff hopes to be back in light training again by the middle of next month and has already ditched his crutches.

His run of 11 Premier League matches before picking up a knee injury resulted in Tottenham Hotspur and other Premier League clubs taking a look at him in January and February.

However, and as reported by Chronicle Live in October, there is also interest in Longstaff from clubs in the Bundesliga.

Indeed, Hertha Berlin, Schalke 04 and RB Leipzig were all aware of Longstaff's position before he signed a professional deal with the Magpies and if United failed to offer him a contract they were ready to step in with a pre-contract has he became available this summer.

Yet Newcastle protected his future by offering him a deal until 2022.

Whether United move to improve that deal after his incredible start remains to be seen, but that has been the case in the past with other local youngsters such as Andy Carroll and Paul Dummett.

Longstaff could find himself higher up the pecking order if any of Jonjo Shelvey, Mo Diame and Isaac Hayden end up leaving St James' Park this summer.

Newcastle United could be left with big decision to make on Jonjo Shelvey as Premier League side weigh up £20million bid
