How Romelu Lukaku’s Chelsea FC transfer will earn Manchester United millions

Romelu Lukaku’s impending £97million transfer to Chelsea will earn their Premier League rivals Manchester United a tidy windfall.

Standard Sport understands that Chelsea academy graduate Lukaku is set to return to Stamford Bridge imminently, sealing a big-money move from Inter Milan just shy of the £100m mark.

While Chelsea will be signing one of the top forwards in European football, the deal also benefits United given the previous deal they struck with Inter.

When United sold Lukaku to the Italian giants back in 2019, they inserted a four per cent sell-on clause into his contract.

That means that United will receive a fee just short of £4m from the £97m Chelsea are paying Inter for Lukaku’s services.

Chelsea are also set to see a reduction of about £1.7m due to the solidarity payment they would be eligible for after developing the 28-year-old as a youth player.

Inter had been holding out for a fee in excess of £100m, but finally relented following negotiations on Friday.

Chelsea had also proposed the inclusion of a player as a makeweight - but the Italian giants rejected the chance to take Marcos Alonso in part exchange.

The windfall will be a boost for United, who are looking to sell before making any further signings this summer following the arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
