How Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has staked claim to start against Celtic

Rangers have suffered a horrible month of March and are on the verge of another trophy-less season.

They were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Aberdeen and are ten points off league leaders Celtic after draws against Hibs and Kilmarnock.

Steven Gerrard will still be hoping for a strong finish to the season and there's no better time to bounce back than in an Old Firm derby.

Over the international break Gerrard will have been keeping a close eye on all his players in action over the weekend.

With the Light Blues ' inconsistent form, it's the perfect opportunity for players to force their way into the manager's plans ahead of the big game at the weekend.

And Steven Davis is one who has certainly done no harm to his chances with his performances for Northern Ireland in their Euro 2020 qualifiers.

The skipper was back to his best for his country as they picked up wins against Estonia and Belarus.

The Ballymena-born midfielder put in an impressive display against the Estonians and scored a decisive goal from the penalty spot as Michael O'Neill's side opened up their campaign with a victory.

Davis then set up Jonny Evans' opening goal against Belarus before Josh Magennis' late winner meant Northern Ireland player ratings on a night of late drama at Windsor Park after their first two games.

After a difficult start at Ibrox since joining on a six-month loan from Southampton, Davis is not only showing signs of form but his experience could be key against the Hoops at Parkhead.

During his first spell at the club, the 34-year-old played in countless Old Firm fixtures and knows exactly what to expect come Sunday.

It's going to be tough ask for Rangers to get a result against their rivals, but the addition of Davis in the starting XI could prove vital.
