How Raheem Sterling can avoid Romelu Lukaku fate as Chelsea must overcome Matthijs de Ligt issue

Davidhersey203: "Hi Adam, what's the latest on the Sterling deal? Some reports are saying the fee is agreed?"

Adam says: "From what we understand, Chelsea have broadly agreed a deal with Man City for Sterling worth an initial £45m plus a further £10m in add-ons. There are still small details to finalise, but hope remains he'll be a part of the squad by the time those later returnees for pre-season get to work in Los Angeles next week."

TrueBlueChelsea: "If a Sterling deal is agreed, do you think he will get a higher wage than what he was earning at Man City? It would make him one of the highest-paid players in our team."

Adam says: "Given his status in the European game – and the fact he is signing from a Premier League rival – I think it's inevitable that Sterling will come in as one of the higher earners in the Chelsea squad. I've not heard the specifics, but I imagine a contract similar to his current Man City deal is on the table."

Tashmid: "Do you think Sterling will be the "New Lukaku"? Someone who will be on high wages and provide low attacking output?"

Adam says: "Personally, I don't. Sterling's record in the Premier League is strong, and what he has over Lukaku is his flexibility to play in different positions and systems. So if one role in Tuchel's set-up isn't working for him, he can be moved across the pitch, or more centrally, or into the frontline. I think that versatility – and his desire to return to London – means he isn't going to be another expensive mistake."

sharmacfc93: "Hi Adam what is the latest on Matthijs de Ligt?"

Adam says: "In terms of de Ligt, Chelsea are confident they can agree a fee with Juventus in the coming days, but things have become slightly more complicated given Bayern Munich's interest.

"Reports in Germany claim de Ligt would prefer a move to Bayern. The problem on that front, though, is the Bundesliga champions aren't believed to be willing to bid as high as Chelsea for the Dutchman. Something else to consider is that the Dutch international supposedly earns around £280,00 a week. That is a huge salary for a club to take on – and I'm doubtful as to whether Bayern would be willing to match it."

nene8: "Latest on Raphinha?"

Adam says: "Not much has changed on the Raphinha front from Chelsea's end for a few days. They've agreed a fee with Leeds and have an outline of a five-year contract in place. The issue, as everyone knows, is the winger is holding out for Barcelona.

"The decision may be made for him in some respect in the coming days, however, as Leeds are understood to want his future sorted given they plan to wrap up a deal for Luis Sinisterra of Feyenoord."

Ganzo: "Ethan Ampadu can play centre back and defensive midfield. Is he in Thomas Tuchel's plans?"

Adam says: "That Ampadu had a strong season in 2021/22 went a little under the radar, although perhaps that was because Venezia were relegated from Serie A. He is expected to join up with the first-team squad for the training camp in Los Angeles next week and will have his opportunity to impress Tuchel.

"It won't be an easy task to force his way in – and I do feel he'd be behind Billy Gilmour in the midfield pecking order – but maybe with no centre-back signed as yet, he'll be able to make a mark."

Rebeccacfc: "A transfer I've been extremely invested in and one that seemed more than destined to go through was Jules Kounde, which somewhat seems dead in the water. I was hoping you'd be able to provide some clarity - is he more of a fallback option now in the event that either De Ligt or Ake are unattainable, or is he still very much set to join this summer provided a fee can be agreed?"

Adam says: The Kounde situation is certainly a strange one as for the best part of a year, he was Chelsea's primary central defensive target – and a five-year contract was even verbally agreed with Kounde earlier this summer ahead of an expected move to Stamford Bridge.

"However, the departure of Marina Granovskaia and extra authority handed to Tuchel by Boehly shook things up, and that's when de Ligt and Nathan moved to the top of Chelsea's wanted list.

"From what I gather, Chelsea haven't completely abandoned their interest in Kounde, but he is certainly no longer the club's first-choice signing at centre-back. It might be one to keep an eye on later in the window if Chelsea can't do the deals they want. I hope that clears things up a little."

GOATBryan: "Hi Adam, may I please know if there is any truth in rumours linking Matheus Nunes to Chelsea? Portuguese outlet A Bola reported it on their front cover & said we plan to bid 45m + 5m euros."

Adam says: "It's well documented new Chelsea co-owner – and interim sporting director –Todd Boehly met Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes last month, and several players were discussed, such as a certain Cristiano Ronaldo. But there doesn't appear to be much substance to the claim the Blues are set to bid imminently for Nunes, whose transfer away from Sporting is reportedly being facilitated by Mendes."

TrueBlueChelsea: "For Armando Broja, there's a lot of interest. But what are the chances he stays on at least until January, and only if he doesn't do well, he could then be loaned out?

Adam says: "One way or another, I believe Broja's future will get sorted this summer. He's going to have pre-season to try to catch the eye of Thomas Tuchel and earn himself a place in the first-team squad – something he genuinely hopes to do. But if that doesn't happen, a permanent move away may become a reality as there are several clubs interested, and from what I gather, he doesn't want to get caught up in the cycle of loans."

Tashmid: "Who do you think could be the new director of sports at Chelsea? When will that position be fulfilled?"

Adam says: "I would expect it to be fulfilled after the current transfer window as there are going to be very few sporting directors, especially good ones, that will depart in the middle of the summer. Michael Edwards is on Chelsea's radar after his departure from Liverpool but appears intent on taking a year away from the game as things stand."
