How Pro Streamer Galaxy Levels Up Her Health While Clocking 10 Hours Of Screen Time

How Pro Streamer Galaxy Levels Up Her Health While Clocking 10 Hours Of Screen Time

Working in front of a screen all day can get overwhelming in so many ways, but in a lot of professions, it’s unavoidable.

I’ve also felt my own health concerns come from this in recent years. Hello, eye strain and perpetual lower back tightness

Australian content creator and Twitch streamer, Galaxy, might just be the final boss of prolonged screen time. Galaxy’s work means that she not only has to sit at a computer for long streaming seshes, but also to edit videos and manage her thriving Twitch community.

With this much behind the screen experience, I sat down with her to find out how she looks after herself and her eye health amid long stretches of screen time.

Round 1: Game on

To properly understand how she manages her health, I first asked Galaxy for the techniques she uses while working to combat the effects of prolonged screentime.

“I spend a lot of time in front of my PC, and eye strain can become really noticeable, especially after busy weeks,” Galaxy noted as she ran through her strenuous day-to-day.

Galaxy has astigmatism, which means that it takes time for her eyes to adjust when shifting her eyes between different focal points. “With streaming, it can be hard to take regular breaks from looking at the screen like we’re supposed to — but I definitely make sure I do when I’m editing or working through admin,” admits Galaxy. She also mentioned the glasses she wears, which are designed to aid with eye fatigue when staring at a screen.

Having to toggle multiple tasks on her computer, Galaxy highlights one of her biggest pet peeves when it comes to wearing glasses for a prolonged time. Needing to wear a headset for her work, Galaxy comments on the discomfort created by the combination of her headphones and glasses.

“I prefer to wear contacts during my off-stream gaming time or editing sessions,” Galaxy points out, referring to her trusty Specsavers easyvision contact lenses. “Contacts are helpful because it means I have less pressure behind my ears. If I’m using a headset, I won’t get sore after a long session at my computer.”

Making the regular switch from her glasses to contact lenses seems to be the key to Galaxy hacking her eye health while working. Wearing contact lenses while gaming or using a computer can offer a wider field of vision, reduce glare, and minimise reflection.

To me, it feels like Galaxy is really in tune with her eyewear preferences while she works, opting for what’s most comfortable at any given time. I might have to give them a try myself next time I’m hitting a long computer sesh.

Round 2: The side-quests

Taking care of her eye health is just the start of Galaxy’s work-life balance game plan. Where she really puts in the work is her time away from the computer screen.

Galaxy prides herself on breaking out of the stereotype that gamers just sit inside, revealing that going to the gym and hiking are actually two of her favourite things to do, expressing that they make her a more “well-rounded individual.”

Acknowledging her lengthy sit-down times, Galaxy makes it a priority to head outside and move her body at least once a day.

“I try to do something active [daily], whether it’s the gym or pushing through hikes,” comments Galaxy, stressing the importance of adding regular exercise to her routine.

“Glasses and contact lenses play a significant role in my daily life,” the streamer states as she describes how her Specsavers easyvision contact lenses give her the freedom to switch between work and play.

Although Galaxy’s profession is also her hobby, she makes sure to still enjoy her passion for outdoor activities and switch up her setting — or, as she calls it, touching grass.

“I spend probably 10 to 12 hours a day sitting in the same chair inside, without the windows open and fake lighting,” Galaxy says, “[so] doing something active [helps me] feel more ready to take on the day because I’ve gotten out.”

“Having access to [contact lenses] means I can head out to the gym or go outside for exercise without worrying about my glasses being uncomfortable or falling off.”

It’s truly the Hannah Montana approach, AKA the best of both worlds. The key to balance is understanding that everything is done in moderation, and by using both her glasses and contacts a reasonable amount, Galaxy is pretty much at god tier.

Round 3: The final boss

Although it might seem that Galaxy lives her busy streaming life on hard mode, she’s found the perfect combo to balancing work and play, and keeps her eyes healthy in the process.

If you’re looking to level up your eye health in and around your screen time, it might be time to hit up the inventory for some handy contact lenses.

Specsavers has got you covered with free contact lens consultations that you can book in-store or online. After taking you through the ins and outs of contacts, they’ll even give you some free loot in the form of contact lenses for your next work mission or fun side quest.
