How Princess Jasmine is a modern Disney Princess in new Aladdin movie

Minor spoilers for Aladdin.

Princess Jasmine is about to take the spotlight in the new live-action version of Disney's Aladdin.

The film from Guy Ritchie is now out in cinemas and we described it as "full of fun, excitement and glorious songs" in our glowing review of the film.

Starring Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Will Smith as the Genie, you'd expect them to rule the roost of the film, but actually it's Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine that takes that crown in more ways that one.

While the Disney animated version of Princess Jasmine was rebellious and refused to conform to social structure by having her father the Sultan decide who she married, there is a more political being with Scott's version.

The animated Jasmine argued for her independence in choosing her husband, the live-action version is much more concerned with knowing her people in Agrabah and being in touch with their hopes and desires.

She meets Aladdin as she is only out in the city streets to see for herself what everyday life is like for her people, not just due to her wanting to flee the stifling nature of the palace.

Jasmine wants to be a political force in Agrabah in her own right and not just eventually have to obey her husband who will rule in her stead.

This is a major plot point in her relationship with her father in this new version too, as she strives to keep her voice in relation to her political beliefs.

This is no better showcased than in the new original song for the live-action film by the original animated film's composer Alan Menken and La La Land lyricists Pasek & Paul, entitled Speechless, which sees her speak up against those trying to silence her views.

This resistance builds to a cathartic ending too, which shows that Disney Princesses aren't just looking for love anymore but if they find it then it's an added bonus.

Aladdin is in UK cinemas now.
