The Championship is set to resume on June 20 - but Nottingham Forest's hopes of promotion to the Premier League may yet be scuppered by events off the pitch, if reports are anything to go by.
One owner of a top-flight clubs is said to have claimed "up to 10" teams in the division want relegation scrapped, if the season has to be curtailed.
The Premier League is due to get back underway, behind closed doors, on June 17, having been suspended since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
But clubs are due to vote this week on what should happen in the event the campaign does have to be curtailed - if, for example, an increase in Covid-19 infections forces tougher lockdown measures to be reimposed.
Last week, Premier League sides were asked to vote twice on matters related to 'Project Restart'.
Firstly, the move to a second phase of training which allowed for contact and, secondly, over the reported £330m rebate for broadcasters.
An agreement in principle was also reached for the Premier League to resume on June 17 but there remains "much work to be done", the league have stressed.
However, and in a bid to ensure every angle is covered, senior officials are recommending a simple points-per-game formula to work out league placings if the season is forced to be cancelled.
That system would see a team's points divided by the number of games they have played, and league placings would be based on the average number of points a team has earned per match.
The recommendation needs the support of 14 clubs in a vote in order to be added to the Premier League's rules.
If used, as things stand, Liverpool would be crowned champions and Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich City would be relegated to the Championship.
But, according to Sky Sports, the majority of teams in the bottom half of the Premier League want relegation scrapped if the season is cancelled.
One club owner has revealed he would vote for scrapping relegation, even though the Football Association ruled it out last month.
"We would vote for no relegation if the season is curtailed," the unnamed owner told Sky Sports. "There are up to 10 clubs who think the same thing."
EFL chairman Rick Parry recently claimed that there would be an "outrage" if there was no relegation and promotion between the Premier League and the Championship.
Forest have been pushing for a return to the top-flight this term, and currently sit fifth in the table.
Sabri Lamouchi's men are 11 points off leaders Leeds United and 10 adrift of second-placed West Bromwich Albion, with a five-point gap to Bristol City, in seventh.
