How Port Talbot's old Plaza Cinema will be transformed for the town

Port Talbot 's Plaza Cinema looks set to get a new lease of life as plans for its future have been unveiled.

If it is given the go-ahead, the YMCA will occupy the Grade II listed building which will offer a cafe, hall, gym and offices that can also be used by the local community.

The plans put forward by Neath Port Talbot Council also include demolishing the auditorium which is in a "poor state of repair".

In total the plans would see a series of new spaces for the benefit of the community, including a multi-purpose hall, cafe and training kitchen, gym, multi-purpose dojo/yoga room, digital studio, office space and meeting rooms on a long or short term lease, as well as two retail units.

A design and access statement by agent Asbri Planning Ltd says: "The final design proposal developed retains an element of the existing Grade II listed building that will be altered and amended in a considerate manner to suit the new use to be included.

"The remaining existing build elements on site (the 'Auditorium'), which is in a poor state of repair will be demolished and cleared to enable a new structure, symmetrically attached to the retained extent which provides additional space for the new use.

"Existing floor levels have been respected with the integrated new element to the rear of the site to ensure the combined proposal site as one complete building."

The building in Talbot Street was built in 1939 and opened the following year but has been vacant for the last 20 years.

It is noted in a planning statement that "the roof has partially collapsed and there is significant internal water damage as a result".

In 2009 Neath Port Talbot Council acquired the cinema with the aim of safeguarding the building and developing a future use.
