How Patrick Bamford's mentality helped him come out of the other side of a ten-match goal drought

Tyler Roberts was full of praise for his Leeds United teammate Patrick Bamford, after the striker stepped up to score a penalty in the 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Bamford stepped up, coolly slotting home the spot-kick after Tosin Aderabiyo fouled Luke Ayling.

Mateusz Klich has scored one and missed one for Leeds recently, and there was some speculation inside Elland Road over who would step up to take it.

The striker kept a vice-like grip of the ball and looked in no doubt that it was his to take, though there looked to be some discussion with Roberts.

"I wanted to get in there but Pat’s been the penalty taker, and he got the goal," said Roberts, speaking to the media after the win.

"He’s been working so hard,"

"He’s kept his head and his composure, he’s not listened to any outside comments and he deserves it."

Bamford started the season in fine form, scoring four goals in the Whites first five games, but he's since suffered a goal drought of ten games without finding the back of the net.

The 26-year-old has often been praised for his all-round play in recent weeks. He was named man of the match without finding the back of the net in the 1-0 win over promotion rivals West Brom, and has often come close.

A memorable acrobatic save from Keiran Westwood denied him against Sheffield Wednesday, while last week against QPR he saw a goal disallowed for a marginal offside and missed a good chance to score after a brilliant last-ditch tackle from Lee Wallace robbed him of the ball.

"It was nice for him to get that feel of hitting the back of the net again," Roberts added.

"The fans are amazing, they’ve stuck by him, he’s stuck by himself and we’ve all stuck by him. We know he’s a great goalscorer and I’m sure that they’ll start coming now."
