How overdoing the festive cheer this New Year could land you with a £75 fine

Festive revellers are being warned they could be hit with a £75 fine if they misbehave while out welcoming in the New Year.

North Somerset Council's community safety team has teamed up with police and Weston-super-Mare PubWatch to run the ‘Dick and Franny’ campaign again this year in a bid to make drinkers think twice this New Year's Eve.

The drive is aimed at 18 to 30-year-olds, who will be out enjoying Weston’s pubs and clubs, to remind them what can happen if they overdo the festive cheer.

Those who misbehave will fall foul of Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) - such as being fined £75 for urinating in the street.

The new orders - which came into force two years ago - now make it an offence to drop litter or cigarette butts or to defecate or urinate in a public place.

The PSPOs replaced designated public protection orders that help the police tackle alcohol-related antisocial behaviour and, where appropriate, local bylaws.

A North Somerset Council spokesman said: “Most people will enjoy their New Year celebrations responsibly, but for the few who might be tempted to behave anti-socially after a night out we hope that the sobering thought of a £75 fine might encourage them to think again.”

The campaign is one element in a programme of joint initiatives aimed at reducing alcohol-fuelled crime and disorder and supporting a more diverse night-time economy in Weston-super-Mare.

Community safety officer Harry Mills said: “The Public Space Protection Orders are being used by officers in the night time economy to tackle anti-social behaviour in public places, such as urinating in the street, more effectively.

“This benefits residents, businesses and their customers by making North Somerset a desirable place to live, visit and work."
