How one simple Christmas tree mistake could cause a huge house fire

Having a real Christmas tree standing in your living room decorated with tinsel and lights is an important part of the festive season.

But real Christmas trees can pose a very serious fire risk.

If your tree is dry, a candle or faulty string of lights could make it go up in flames far quicker than a well watered one.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in the US, plenty of people are at risk of their tree catching fire because they haven't watered it enough, MirrrorOnline reports.

The CPSC recently shared an eye-opening video of two Christmas trees, one well-watered, the other a dry tree.

To show just how dangerous a dry tree can be, they set fire to both and shockingly the dry tree goes up in a blaze in just seconds.

The watered one takes much longer to completely catch alight.

"A dry Christmas tree burns faster than newspaper," the CPSC warns.

They added: "Safety should be part of all your decorating efforts.

"Make sure your live Christmas tree has plenty of water, keep lit candles away from flammable items, and use caution when standing on a ladder or a chair to hang decorations."

They went on to share a number of decorating safety tips, including keeping trees away from heat sources, buying fire resistant artificial trees, avoiding sharp or breakable decorations if you have children and thoroughly checking all lights before putting them up to make sure there are no broken or cracked plugs, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections.
