Newcastle United have appointed veteran boss Steve Bruce on a three-year deal.
The Magpies have replaced Rafael Benitez with the former Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa boss, much to the disapproval of the Toon Army.
Bruce arrives at St James’ Park having resigned as Sheffield Wednesday boss, not that his resignation gets United out of paying for his services, however.
Newcastle still had to pay a reported fee of £4 million to the Owls to get their man.
And while United fans may not agree with his appointment, Bruce certainly brings with him a wealth of experience.
From Birmingham to Wigan, Southampton to Hull, the veteran boss is no newcomer to the Premier League.
Speaking to the club’s official website about his appointment, Bruce said: "I’m delighted and incredibly proud to be appointed as head coach of Newcastle United. This is my boyhood club and it was my dad’s club, so this is a very special moment for me and my family.
“There is a huge challenge ahead of us, but it’s one that my staff and I are ready for. We’ll roll our sleeves up and we’ll be giving it everything from the off to ensure supporters have a successful team that they can be proud of.”
Bruce’s long management career, spanning over 21 years, following on from a 20-year career as a player, has supporters asking just how old the veteran of the game really is.
And the answer is 58.
Born on New Year’s Eve in 1960, Bruce is 58 years of age.
By the time his contract at St James’ Park expires, should he make it to the end of the deal, he will be 61 years old.
