How often you should really wash your bedding during the coronavirus pandemic

As the country experiences more lockdown restrictions in the wake of surging cases of coronavirus, keeping our homes clean and tidy has never been more important.

The NHS still advises washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and using hand sanitiser gel to maximise your health and safety during the pandemic.

Though there is speculation on how often we should be washing our bedding, cleaning experts have revealed just how frequently we should be changing our sheets.

For the most hygienic results, bedding should be washed once a week.

Dry cleaning company Love2Laundry’s founder Nadeem Abbas has unveiled tips on bed hygiene which could prove useful as more of us continue to spend time at home in the wake of new regulations:

  • Wash your sheets once a week. On average, people produce almost two litres of sweat every week while sleeping. Washing your sheets every week keeps them free of allergens, germs and fungi.
  • Wash your bedding on the highest temperature suitable for the fabric. Higher temperatures will kill microbes more effectively. Cotton sheets can generally withstand higher temperatures than polyester.
  • Avoid fabric softener. Though we all love our sheets to smell fresh and clean, excessive use of fabric softener creates a build-up of residue on the material which makes them less absorbent and can promote the spread of germs. If you’re not willing to give up fabric softener altogether, try using it every other time you wash your sheets in order to reduce the residue.

Nadeem Abbas also encourages making your bed everyday to promote a sense of control and routine in the current climate.

Nadeem said: “Personal hygiene has never been more important and the effects of simple tasks like making your bed every day can be dramatic, especially if your routine has been upended by coronavirus.”
