How often you should be washing your hair, according to an expert

If you can't live without dry shampoo, then you probably know that washing your hair can be a time consuming pain.

Too clean and it can be hard to style, too dirty and you look like an oil slick.

RSVP Live reports that if you've got long locks, factoring washing, drying and styling can add hours on to your getting ready time.

But, in an ideal world, how often should we be washing our hair?

Is every day bad for your barnet? Is once a week too infrequent?

Hair stylist Julian Farel told GQ that there are no hard and fast rules as everyone's hair is different.

However he said that he has noticed that his clients are less likely to suffer from greasy hair if they cut back on how often they shampoo.

"If you shampoo every day, it will strip your scalp of all its natural oils and can lead to dry, brittle hair," he said.

He recommends washing your hair every two or three days, but there are exceptions to this.

Celebrity stylist Paul Cucinello told Women's Health that if your hair is badly damaged from too much heat styling, you need to take extra care of it and shampoo only once or twice a week.

The same goes for dry hair, but remember you can still condition your hair without shampooing it (as regularly as every other day).

If you've been working out and are worried about your hair being sweaty, you can rinse it with just water and it will still feel clean.

Those with oilier hair can shampoo "every other day" - but don't shampoo every day unless your hair looks greasy by the early evening.

'When conditioning, make sure to keep product on just the ends to avoid adding to the problem," stylist Jenny Cho told InStyle.

Try to use a shampoo that's designed for your hair type, whether that's a moisturising shampoo for dry hair, a repairing shampoo for damaged hair or a gentle shampoo for coloured hair.
