How often is the Greater Manchester mayoral election and when did the last one take place?

The Greater Manchester mayoral election is set to take place in two weeks' time.

Voters will take to the polls to have their say on who they think should be the mayor and leader of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

The election will take place on the same day as local council elections, including the election for the mayor of Salford, as well as elections across England and Wales.

This will be on Thursday, May 6.

But you may be wondering when the last mayoral election took place and how often they are.

Well, this year will be the second year for the Greater Manchester mayoral elections to have taken place.

The first election for the role was held in 2017, where Labour candidate Andy Burnham was appointed.

There was a major shift in how the country is run - with powers, budgets and responsibilities passed down from central government to new directly-elected mayors in six regions across England.

The mayor has power over investment directly to the combined authority from the government of £30 million a year for 30 years.

Following the inaugural election, the next was due on May 7, 2020, but like other elections, it was postponed due to the pandemic.

Subsequent elections are required to be held every four years thereafter, so after this year's, the next mayoral election will take place in 2024.

Polling stations will be open with Covid-safe measures, with voters expected to wear face coverings, observe social distancing and use hand sanitiser when they arrive.

Eamonn Boylan, the returning officer for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, said: “These elections across Greater Manchester are an opportunity for residents to have their say and decide who makes important decisions that affect them and the places where they live.”
