How Nottingham's 'most patriotic street' is preparing for Euro 2020 final

Residents in a street dubbed Nottingham’s most patriotic have voiced their excitement ahead of England’s Euro 2020 final.

Pinewood Gardens in Clifton is completely covered with England flags and memorabilia that can be seen hanging from homes.

It is a street on which you can feel the excitement in the air ahead of England’s huge clash against Italy on Sunday, July 11.

The England football team's recent successes have meant street parties have become far more frequent here - and neighbours say it will be "manic" if England win Euro 2020.

Resident Pauline Wright said: "England are going to win! I think we have got this far; we have got to win now.

“I should think the street is going to be manic if we do win; it will be absolutely manic.

“We have loads of street parties on here and everyone is invited.

“One reason I think England have got as far as we have is thanks to communities coming together and cheering them on.

“I used to live on the coast, and I didn’t think I would ever settle up here, but you come here and everybody on the street has been so brilliant to me. I cannot fault anybody.”

Locals have said that the closeness of the community has helped to make England’s tournament success even more enjoyable.

The local community often bands together even when England are not playing.

John Blackmore, a 40-plus year resident of Pinewood Gardens, said: “It has been good since the semi-final – there will probably be a party if we do win on Sunday.

“Since Covid and everything we still manage to have street parties but at a safe distance for everybody.

“We are generally out anyway; we all do things with each other and look out for each other.

John’s wife, Susan Blackmore, added: “I just feel lucky to live on a road where you can feel the closeness of the community – it is just a nice street.

“No doubt we will all come out on Sunday; I think we will be having a party!

“We have a message group called Pinewood Gardens, so we all know what is going on and how everyone is doing, and we share photos and videos during the England game.”

Holly Brindley, who lives among the flag-covered street, said: “Normally at least a few of us get together when it is England playing.

“I think the general feel on this street is just England fever!”
