How Nottingham Forest are paying tribute to Derrick Otim at Fulham game

Nottingham Forest will pay tribute to Derrick Otim at tonight's match against Fulham.

The former Reds academy player tragically died at the age of 24 on Friday.

Reports in America say that he drowned in a swimming accident following a trip to Lake Keowee, South Carolina.

Otim had studied and graduated at Xavier University, in Cincinnati, having moved to America when leaving Forest in 2015.

Forest have now confirmed that will be a minute's applause in his memory ahead of kick-off (5pm) at the City Ground today.

The club announced the tribute with a touching post on social media which featured a Forest number nine shirt with "Del" on the back.

"Always in our thoughts, Del," said the post.

"We will remember former academy player Derrick Otim, who tragically passed away over the weekend, with a minute's applause before tonight's match."

Tributes have poured in for Otim since the sad news of his passing broke.

His brother Elvis, who also played at the Reds, described him as an “inspiration”.

And Forest star Matty Cash tweeted: "RIP Del, can’t believe I’m writing this. Such a top lad who always brought a smile to everyone’s face when around him. RIP."

Meanwhile a statement from Xavier University read: “Better known to all of us as Del, Derrick exemplified the spirit and hard work of a Xavier student-athlete.

“Not only did Del excel on the field of play, but his perseverance through off-the-field challenges demonstrated his character.

“The entire Xavier family grieves for Del and his family.”

Otim never played a first-team game for Forest but was a regular in the academy and the reserves.
