How Nottingham city centre looked the week after controversial Christmas Market

Nottingham city centre looks a lot quieter one week on from the opening of the city's controversial Christmas Market.

The market was closed just 24 hours after it started on Saturday, December 5.

Hundreds of people were pictured in Old Market Square last weekend, with concerns raised over a lack of social distancing. Nottingham City Council and Mellors Group then made the decision to close this year's market for good.

Alison Challenger, Director of Public Health at Nottingham City Council, told Nottinghamshire Live the city had become a "magnet" now non-essential shops were open and she was "worried" Christmas could prevent a fall in cases.

Seven days on, Old Market Square looked an entirely different picture. There was a small police presence there but no stalls or big crowds in the square, just a smattering of Christmas shoppers.

The few shoppers who had braved the rain queued outside nearby Primark and Pret A Manger, but the city centre was a stark contrast to the hive of activity seen at the same time last week.

Those who were out and about in the city centre told Nottinghamshire Live they believed closing the market was a good decision.

Mark Stanley, 50, from Arnold, said: "I didn't go last week, but I work nearby so I saw the crowds.

"It was unbelievable the sheer amount of people. I was really, really confused. I was thinking 'aren't we supposed to be in Tier 3?'

"People were getting drinks from elsewhere and bringing them to the market and they were buying food from the market too.

"If the market was allowed to sell food, why are pubs and restaurants still made to shut? It made no sense.

"My partner works nearby as well, and he physically couldn't get through the crowd after finishing for the day. That's how busy it was.

"I much prefer it when it's quieter like it is today."

Meanwhile, Ray Fields, 62, told Nottinghamshire Live: "I didn't go because I thought it would be busy. And I was right.

"I don't think it should have been put on but at least it was closed pretty quickly."

Sarah Parker, who was shopping in the city centre, said: "Look, I can see why they wanted to put it on to cheer people up.

"But it ended up being a bit embarrassing. Piers Morgan was even talking about it. It's so frustrating if we do see a rise in cases because of it."

Nottingham City Council Leader, Councillor David Mellen, apologised after the closure and admitted they had misjudged how many people would come into the city centre.

Police were forced to break up a street party near the market on Saturday evening, with footage showing speakers playing music as large groups danced nearby.
