How not to treat citizen journalists

Is this the way to treat citizen journalists? One, posting here, says he is no longer willing to write for the Kent Courier because the paper has asked him, and other community news columnists, "not only work for no payment, but also to sell ad space to local businesses."

He/she reveals that the writers were paid £9 a week and £3 a month towards expenses. "More than two thirds" of the columnists are said to have pulled out too, though I see from the site that four remain. (Via Adrian Monck)
