How North Tyneside planning applications could be decided if councillors can’t meet

A report, heard by North Tyneside Council's planning committee, said that decisions could still be made without the need for public meetings.

The council may not be able to meet due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

"The council’s constitution currently provide relevant heads of service with authority in consultation with the chair and deputy chair of the relevant committee to make urgent decisions in relation to regulatory functions, where it is not practical to convene a quorate meeting of the relevant committee," it said.

If this was to happen Phil Scot, head of environment, housing and leisure, will decide on applications with committee chairman Frank Lott or deputy chairman Trish Brady.

Representations from supporters or concerned residents can be submitted in writing.

Planning committee meetings will only be cancelled in line with Government guidance and the council policy on the unfolding outbreak.

The report added: "In the absence of the speaking rights scheme, any written representations from objectors and supporters of planning applications would continue to be considered by officers in determining applications.

"Any decision to cancel planning committee meetings will be taken in consultation with the chair of the committee, taking into account Government guidance and the council’s overall response to the situation."
