How NI boy with autism inspired quiet sessions for Tim Peake’s spacecraft

An autistic boy with a heartwarming story has inspired a series of “Quiet Sessions” for visitors with sensory needs for Tim Peake’s spacecraft exhibition at the Ulster Transport Museum .

Hayden Geraghty, who was born with autism and ADHD, suffered with speech difficulties until December 2015 when the then five-year-old hit national headlines.

Tim Peake’s spacecraft, Soyuz TMA-19M, which is currently on display at the Ulster Transport Museum, was preparing to launch from Baikonur Cosmodrome, in Russia, and while watching a live broadcast of the launch, remarkably, Hayden joined in with the countdown.

"In many ways, I was speechless," said mum, Caroline Geraghty, from Limavady.

"Until that day I had never heard my Hayden say a full sentence. I’ll never forget that day. Hayden has been on a remarkable journey ever since, and his progress stratospheric."

As part of the Tim Peake’s Spacecraft exhibition presented by Samsung and the Science Museum Group , the Ulster Transport Museum is hosting its "Quiet sessions" which offer a more gentle atmosphere and are developed to cater for visitors with sensory needs.

The next session takes place this Sunday, April 7, from 9am to 10am. One final session before the exhibition closes will take place on Sunday, May 5.

Tim Peake’s spacecraft will remain on display at the museum until Sunday, May 12, and is free to visit.

Quiet Sessions are free however pre-booking is advised. You can book by contacting Stephen on 028 9039 5091 or email  soyuz@nmni.com .
