How NHS staff face vile racist abuse after ‘noticeable’ rise in incidents

  • Experts, including the Society of Radiographers, have reported a "noticeable" increase in xenophobic and racist comments directed at NHS staff over the past 18 months.
  • Incidents include staff being called "monkeys" and "dirty foreigners", with patients refusing treatment from non-white healthcare professionals.
  • A poll of SoR members revealed some staff feel forced to accept racist remarks, prompting the Society to call for better recording and monitoring of such incidents.
  • The latest NHS Staff Survey indicates a five-year high in discrimination experienced by staff from patients, with 9.26 per cent reporting incidents in the last 12 months.
  • NHS England has condemned the abuse, stating that organisations must take action to prevent and respond to racism, including the option to refuse care to abusive patients in non-emergency situations.
