How Newcastle United U23s have helped feed over 400 families this week

Newcastle United's U23 squad surprised volunteers at the NUFC Fans Foodbank by paying them a last-minute visit before Sunday's victory over Southampton.

The club's head of academy coaching Ben Dawson organised the visit leaving those manning the donation stall pleased to see the players taking an interest in the community.

The group dropped of a large donation of tinned food before having photographs taken by the stall with the volunteers.

Speaking to Chronicle Live, Dawson said the squad decided that they wanted to be part of the effort to help those in need: "The club has supported the food bank in a number of ways and the lads made a decision as a group last year that they wanted to be part of that.

"Their visit is a continuation of what they did last year.

"It makes more sense at this time of year and it shows that the lads are thinking of people other than themselves."

The donations collected prior to kick-off against Southampton totaled £2331, and 291kg of food and toiletries - which means 446 families across the city will have access to a hot meal this week.

Bill Corcoran, who volunteers at the foodbank, praised the U23 squad and described them as 'genuine lads.'

Speaking to Chronicle Live, he said: "Ben got in touch and simply asked 'what do you need?' and I explained.

"They brought a big donation - it was great to see.

"They were all genuine lads and got to see just how generous this community is, and how generous Newcastle fans really are.

"They're just young lads but it was great to see them so interested and comfortable among those donating.

"Some of those lads are from Newcastle, some are from hundreds of miles away but they all got to see the spirit that unites this city - and why it means so much."
