How Newcastle United played a part in Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United dominance

Sir Alex Ferguson was a big fan of bringing through youth players while he was in charge at Manchester United.

One of those who followed a similar path to the famous class '92 was Kieran Richardson, who made his debut for Manchester United against Newcastle United in November 2002.

The game finished 5-3 to Manchester United - despite Alan Shearer scoring a superb free-kick, and one of those who played in that game - Jermaine Jenas - believes that it was another example of how Sir Alex used Newcastle United to progress the development of younger players.

In a conversation with Kieran Richardson on BBC 5 Live, Jenas stated his view that because the two teams had such 'crazy' games - Sir Alex chose to give many youngsters their debut against Newcastle more than any other team.

"We had some crazy games," Jenas recounted.

"I remember Kieran coming on, and I'd already been chasing Mikel Silvestre down the left wing for 60 minutes.

"What Sir Alex did, and he did it a lot against Newcastle - our games were always crazy; loads of goals but we were never going to win the game but we were always scoring goals only for Manchester United to go and score another one... [Kieran Richardson interrupts: So everyone made debuts against you?]

"Yeah basically - I just have this memory of you coming on and just running around and leaving me thinking 'I can't deal with this guy'."
