How Newcastle United is helping to support vulnerable people during coronavirus lockdown

Newcastle United is helping to support people in crisis by donating its unused food following the closure of its sites amid the coronavirus lockdown.

Bars, pubs and restaurants have closed across the country after the Government brought in tough restrictions to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

And the football club's hospitality venues have also shut.

Now their surplus stock is being donated to the Newcastle West End Food Bank, which is continuing to help people with emergency food parcels across the city.

John McCorry, chief executive of the food bank, said: "Restaurants, bars and a number of businesses in Newcastle City Centre have closed in line with Government restrictions and a number of them, big and small, had a lot of perishable goods in stock.

"They wanted to put it to good use and decided to donate these items to us so we could distribute them through the food bank. We were able to present the goods as add-ons in our food parcels.

"Newcastle United has also stopped operating its hospitality venues and they contacted us to offer us the ambient and perishable goods they had not used.

"When their first match was cancelled, they donated all their pies that would not have been sold to fans.

"They are showing great community spirit. These items will help vulnerable people who don't have access to shops and may be struggling during this health crisis."

Mr McCorry said the charity had a good partnership with the NUFC Fans Food Bank, through which Toon supporters regularly make donations.

He added: "We are still looking for food donations, ideally non-perishable, as the coronavirus lockdown goes on.

"The number of people who will need assistance will grow."
