How Newcastle United could be mathematically safe by Sunday, if results go their way

Whatever happens today, Newcastle United can’t quite make certain of safety in the Premier League – but they can be secure by Sunday if results go their way.

Cardiff’s win against Brighton means they shaved the gap between the Magpies and the bottom three to seven points with four matches to play. With a vastly superior goal difference, it is effectively eight points, of course.

Rafa Benitez warns his players that Newcastle United are STILL not safe from relegation

If Newcastle win this afternoon and Cardiff are beaten by Liverpool, United can start planning definitively for life in the top flight. If United fail to win – and even draw – they cannot be mathematically safe until next weekend’s fixture at Brighton. A Newcastle win and Cardiff draw wouldn’t mean they were mathematically safe either, though with their goal difference advantage it would mean they are in practice.

Rafa Benitez warns his players that Newcastle United are STILL not safe from relegation but there is not much reason to fret though.

Of course, today’s opponents Southampton and Brighton – who have a terrible run-in – are also below Newcastle so even a massive surge from Cardiff isn’t going to drag United under the line.

United travel to Brighton and Fulham in the run-in, and they have Liverpool at St James’ Park on May 4. Every position is worth around £1million in the Premier League.
