How Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has slowly but surely silenced critics like Graeme Souness and Jamie Redknapp

Rafa Benitez has urged his team to stay grounded as they head into the Premier League's seven-game run-in.

Benitez hopes his players can adopt the same calm attitude he had when he came under fire at the start of the season and his tactics were labelled "embarrassing" by some pundits.

But United are now looking likely to end the season on a high and with the goal difference in good shape - and possibly worth an extra point - Benitez has been proved right in many ways.

The Newcastle chief wants his players to avoid getting carried away with the highs and not to get too concerned if they pick up one negative result.

United could have slipped a couple of places down the Premier League table before they travel to Arsenal on Monday night but they could also still have that seven-point cushion between themselves and third bottom Cardiff City before they kick off.

The Bluebirds face a tough home game against Chelsea at home on Sunday afternoon but while the bookies have all but declared Newcastle as a Premier League team for next season, Benitez knows his side's survival bid is not over yet.

He said: "Cardiff and Southampton are doing well, Burnley also.

"There are many teams still around us.

"But don't forget one thing when you play in the Premier League and with the top six if you play two of them in a row.

"Maybe you will be back in the tricky situation.

"So I think it is important to concentrate on the next game and that's it."

When referencing consecutive games against the top six, Benitez was perhaps talking about Cardiff's brutal run-in.

Cardiff play Chelsea this weekend and then travel to Manchester City for a daunting midweek game at the Etihad Stadium.

Yet Benitez is trying his best to focus on his own team's fortunes.

United have not won an away game since mid-December and it has been their home form which has helped them scramble back up the table.

But they head to Arsenal on Monday night on the back of a solid point at AFC Bournemouth after showing fighting spirit to snatch an equaliser in stoppage time thanks to Matt Ritchie.

Benitez said: "I remember at the start of the season when our home form was not the best, and the away form was quite good - now it is the opposite.

"Hopefully we can be consistent and do well away."

Slowly but surely, United have transformed their season from a relegation battle to a potential push for a top 10 finish.

Even Benitez found himself under fire at one stage of the campaign as some critics questioned whether he was the right man for the job and he should be questioned.

Back in August Jamie Redknapp suggested Benitez should be "embarrassed" by this defensive tactics while Graeme Souness felt they were "unacceptable".

But despite having limited resources and an uncertain political backdrop at St James' Park, the former Napoli and Inter Milan chief has swung Newcastle back on to a safe path.

Benitez reflected: "For me, I knew that sooner rather than later we'd start winning at home because we were very close.

"It's one thing when you can't create chances if you aren't good enough, but we were close in the games, so I had confidence and I think the players did too.

"They created chances in every game.

"The players train every day with the same ideas, movement and methodology.

"We have to have the belief we can do well and replicate something we did last season."
