How Newcastle reacted to Geordie Shore 10 years ago with MP appalled and cast turned away from bar

It has now been a whole decade since Geordie Shore burst onto our screens, with its first episode sparking a huge reaction from people in Newcastle and all over the UK.

The Tyneside-shot series was billed as the UK's answer to hit American show Jersey Shore and from the get-go its cast matched their Stateside counterparts with their drinking and bed hopping.

The first episode on May 24 2011, which saw Geordie Shore original cast members like Vicky Pattison, Gaz Beadle and Charlotte Crosby move into a house in Jesmond, caused shockwaves through the city, with their antics prompting outcry from local politicians and disgruntled residents.

The show was branded "bordering on pornographic” by Newcastle Central Labour MP Chi Onwurah, who, having seen footage of the first episode, said: "I’m raising questions in Parliament because I think there should be a limit on how much alcohol a broadcaster can pour down the throats of young people to provoke sensational acts.”

A series of Facebook groups were set up in the wake of Geordie Shore' s debut with one called RIP Geordie Pride 24/05/2011 10:00pm (Geordie Shore), attracting 30,000 members and another Not All Geordies Are Idiots also attracting a large following.

ChronicleLive reported that a week on from Geordie Shore making its debut, its cast were turned away from Newcastle city centre nightspot Perdu, with star Greg Lake tweeting: "Perdu don’t want Geordie Shore in....Ha their loss...It’s all about Ohso tonight.”

While local alcohol campaigners also queued up to slam the series for its glamorisation of binge drinking, the show became an instant success for MTV, with its first instalment attracting 330,000 viewers, a record high for the channel.

Although some Geordies accused the show of giving Newcastle a bad reputation, others were among the hundreds of thousands who tuned in week to week and seized the opportunity to grab pictures with the cast if they saw them about town.

Perdu's loss proved to be other venues gain as well as the aforementioned Ohso and the likes of Tup Tup Palace, Bijoux, Florita's and Tiger Tiger welcomed the attention the show brought them.

People from all across the UK, particularly groups of stags and hens, headed to Newcastle to do bar crawls of the places seen on Geordie Shore, with Geordie Tours soon set up to give fans of the show a night on the town similar to the ones experienced by the cast.

And, while viewers keen for some Geordie Shore-style partying headed to Newcastle, its stars soon became in demand for PAs across the country and soon even further afield in Australia.

Love it or hate it, Geordie Shore has established itself as MTV UK's most successful show in its history, with close to a million people tuning into every episode, and doesn't look like going anywhere soon!
