How Newcastle players are aiming to make Saturday's Liverpool game a 'memorable' occasion for fans

Newcastle United players are aiming to deliver a "memorable" performance against Premier League title challengers Liverpool this weekend, insists Matt Ritchie.

Jurgen Klopp's team trail defending champions Manchester City by just a solitary point heading into the final two matches of the season.

The Reds visit St James' Park on Saturday night to take on former manager Rafa Benitez and his Magpies side, who have collected seven points from their last three games.

Rafa Benitez sends a warning to Liverpool - and calls on Newcastle to replicate Man City display

Ritchie and his United team-mates recognise that a global audience will be fixated on the events at St James' Park, and they will be expecting Liverpool to take another step towards claiming their first top-flight title since 1990.

Yet Ritchie is confident that Newcastle, who are already safe, will not allow their standards to slip - and will instead aim to replicate the sort of intense, all-action performance which downed Man City at St James' Park back in January.

Asked about Newcastle's target for the final two matches of the season, Ritchie said: "Keep trying to maximum points.

"We've got a fantastic game on Saturday night against Liverpool at St James' Park. It's the last home game of the season, and I'm sure it'll be a fantastic atmosphere.

"Hopefully, we can put on a show, put on a performance, and get something from the game. Then the game away at Fulham, which we'll look to target and get points from.

"It's down to us as to what we achieve in the next two games. There won't be any let up in the dressing room.

"Every game we go into, especially at home, we look at take points from, and it won't be any different [against Liverpool]. It'll be a good occasion, and hopefully we can make it a memorable one."

The Magpies are 13th in the table, having moved on to 42 points after securing a draw against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex on Saturday.

But Newcastle could have been two points better off, had their impressive first-half performance on the south coast been mirrored during the second period, but the Magpies lost their defensive solidity after the break against Brighton.

"[In the] first half, I thought we were really good. In the second half, it was really frustrating, and we didn't keep the ball well enough," Ritchie reflected upon the Brighton draw.

"Obviously, the second goal's massive in a game like that, and we didn't quite get it in the first half.

"I think we should have had a couple of penalties but it wasn't to be and, in the second half, we weren't good enough.

Ayoze Perez gives update on his hip injury as he admits he's 'desperate' to play against Liverpool

"We work on stopping crosses. The switch of play was one of their weapons that we needed to stop. We didn't manage to do that [for their goal], and it was disappointing. Muzza [Glenn Murray] was in there, and we knew how much of a threat he is in the air. It was a soft goal to concede."

After hosting Liverpool on Saturday, Newcastle travel to west London to take on Fulham in the final game of their Premier League season.

And, although United know they will be playing in the top-flight again next season, Ritchie is adamant the players will not allow their standards to slip, with Newcastle determined to finish as high as possible in the Premier League table - and surpass the 44-point tally they collected last term.

"There's no complacency," Ritchie replied when asked whether the fact Newcastle are already safe contributed to the drop-off in performance during the second half.

"I think a few of the lads had knocks. There were three of us carrying knocks, niggles and things. I think that played a part late in the game, but it's no excuse. It's not good enough.

"We pride ourselves on defending well, and we didn't do that in the second half. I don't think it was down to our defending, it was more down to how we kept the ball. We kept turning the ball over.

"It was so frustrating. We didn't really get out and get a foothold in the game second half."
