How Newcastle joined forces with Major League Baseball, the NBA and the Bundesliga to plot return to action

Newcastle United doctor Paul Catterson has revealed that the Magpies are sharing information with some of the top sporting leagues in the world to get through the virus pandemic.

The Magpies have returned to training and Dr Catterson has already started planning for phase two of the Premier League's restart which would put the club in a position to safely play games behind closed doors and complete the season.

It has now emerged that Newcastle and their Premier League rivals have joined forces to share information with the Bundesliga with German action starting their second round of fixtures after the global lockdown.

Catterson revealed that talks with Major League Baseball clubs and NBA teams has also taken place.

He told the Chronicle: "We have shared a lot and I have been speaking with people at the NBA and MLB and other different countries around the world.

"The German league has taken the lead on it.

"All I would say is that the impact of Covid-19 in society in Germany itself is slightly different in the way it has impacted compared to the UK.

"They have been very good at sharing information.

"The medical officer of the Premier League and he has spoken to his opposite number at the Bundesliga.

"There is a common sense of sharing and nobody is gaining a competitive advantage of this as it is for the benefit of everybody that we are able to proceed."

The information is now being distributed to players on a daily basis and Dr Catterson has been working with the squad throughout the last two months.

He added: "We tried to get as much as we could educationally with the group.

"There were one on ones too and people phoned me with questions.

"We have just tried to keep them informed on what's happening.

"There have been concerns on an individual level but that's human nature.

"I completely respect that.

"We're all different and all live in different circumstances.

"It is important to allay those fears and the only way to do that is to adhere to the policies and the procedures as much as possible."
