How Newcastle boss Steve Bruce had Dwight Yorke trending on transfer deadline day

He retired from football almost 11 years ago but Dwight Yorke found himself trending on social media this afternoon on transfer deadline day.

And it was all down to Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce.

Fear not, Newcastle's need for goalscoring reinforcements has not become so desperate that they are trying to tempt the 49-year-old back into top flight football, although the former Manchester United and Aston Villa forward was a prolific marksman during his day.

Instead, when discussing which of his Magpies players were missing through injury, Bruce mistakenly referred to Dwight Gayle as Yorke.

After failing with a bid to sign Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud, Bruce was speaking about the difficulty of bringing in a forward during the January transfer window.

He told reporters in his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow's Premier League clash with Norwich: "In two weeks we'll have Andy Carroll, Dwight Yorke and [Yoshinori] Muto all available."

The Magpies have added Valentino Lazaro, Danny Rose and Nabil Bentaleb to their ranks this month but supporters fear it is a gamble not to have brought in a new forward.

Joelinton, Carroll, Gayle and Muto have scored just three goals between them this season but have been tasked with scoring the goals to preserve United's Premier League status.
